It has been a tradition at Wesleyan for decades. Under cover of night, members of a campus organization slip quietly -- or maybe not so quietly -- across college grounds to stake their claim to a Wesleyan landmark: The Rock. “It’s certainly one of the longest standing traditions in Greek life here,” said John Bohman, director of Greek life at Wesleyan. Bohman said that while he is not sure when the tradition started, he has talked to alumni from the 1950s who recall taking part in the nighttime paintings. Situated between Wesley Chapel, the English Annex and the Administration Building, The Rock has borne witness to years of Wesleyan’s storied history. Many of Wesleyan’s famous and infamous have left their mark there. It has been every color imaginable, and has featured some impressive designs. Organizations have painted The Rock to announce events, celebrate athletic wins, or raise awareness of varied issues and concerns.
