Busick to fill in at linebacker for Lazear

MORGANTOWN— Branko Busick is accustomed to being at the center of attention when it comes to football. Playing in Steubenville, Ohio, means the townsfolk live and die with its storied high school football team, and the Big Red players are sort of small-town celebrities. But now the red-shirt freshman will be stepping it up a notch or two, stepping in for the injured Pat Lazear at middle linebacker and making a start for a West Virginia University team that has nearly an entire state rallying around it. “I’m prepared,” said Busick, the Ohio Division IV Defensive Player of the Year as a high school senior. “My teammates are behind me 110 percent. They want to make sure that I’m ready.” As a true freshman, Busick did not go the traditional route of playing with the scout team, a group of players used to simulate the opponent’s offenses and defenses as the varsity prepares for the upcoming game.

Jared Wegman had 59 yards all-purpose yards for the Bulldogs (0-10), who trailed 22-0 at halftim.
