No more delays for Corridor H

January 30, 2013

Tourism already is a major contributor to West Virginia’s economy, but it could become much, much more important if a better highway route existed to bring East Coast residents to our majestic......

i painstakingly read all these comments and i knew if i kept reading i would hear that the democrates are to blame. why anyone would want to come here for any reason besides to build anew house in remote areas to enjoy the beauty of our state is beyond me. there isnt much here. out of staters dont come to sell dr gs,they come here to buy them. from locals.

Do you mean friendly like you are? Sheesh. Have you ever heard of an out of state visitor being caught bringing meth here? Maybe a little exposure to the outside world would do you some good. Decent infrastructure would definitely do local business some good.

Democrats in this democrat-controlled state for decades refuse to discuss or do any tort reform. Until that happens, WV will NEVER get good paying jobs into this state. NO business is even interested in considering this state of tax and spend democrats!

Outsiders coming in here is what is going to cause exorbitant fees, taxes, and crime. I, for one will be happy that there is not money to finish this corrider. Folks love WV for its country-settings, it's low crime rate and friendly citizens. No more! Corrider H will change ALL these things drastically. Watch these fools complain then, because they will when they see their taxes quadruple. WV doesn't want to be like Virginia where one pays outrageous taxes to support all the crime that big 'city' and higher populations bring on a community! You don't get to 'choose' the type of folks that come in and we WILL and ARE right now seeing crime raise drastically already in the state. And MOST are not citizens of WV that are doing it.

We don't have jobs for two reasons Audy. We don't have Tort Reform and the old relics in the WV legislature doesn't want jobs in this state. Many of them own businesses, and they know they will have to pay better if we have a lot of industry come to the state. I've seen them run off several major companies like Tyson Foods & Carnation Foods. They decided against coming here after finding out WV does very little to curb bogus lawsuits. Our Worker's Compensation is another negative for the state.

When you have attorneys in the state House and Senate that have active law practices, you're not going to get Tort Reform because they're getting rich off the bogus lawsuits. Having McGraw as an attorney General didn't help either. Our roads are the least of the problem.

Made an error below.."They wouldNT allow me to hunt on them so when I bought the lands they were encroaching and hunting upon, I cut them out. Had several arrested! Hardly seen any deer due to them killing them all. Now I have quite a few to pick from. Even allow the game warden(s) and law enforcement to hunt after I am done. They caught several and gave tickets. One guy claimed to own my land! Even told the game warden to get off his land..the warden smiled and ask him his name to make sure he knew where and hows land he was on. He gave the warden my name (warden knew me well) and he was arrested on the spot! Took his gun, car, and spent a spell in jail. Plus he was fined 5k! Never did pay the fine! But he doesn't hunt anymore! Lost his license! What does this have to due to H..well it demonstrated to me that some (a few) in Wv are selfish, uneducated about the benefits and progress of civilization can bring. Education showed me that industrial revolution & more changed

Just think folks, our kids can come home within a few hrs fr DC,VA,MD. You can see them more often..I fail to see anyother hwys like this as PureMagix suggests (seen this before)? Cannot fault his thinking! I have seen fields of crimson clover filled the next Yr of a sea of houses in Va.Md.Pa..most Wv people who found jobs in the areas. Why doesn't WV have jobs..NO ROADS! Wv has the best workers in the world! Highest output per employee! If we enforce WV laws (pollution, discharge and etc) we can retain wild wonderful Wv. As for posting property. It belongs to them! We have thousands upon thousands of sq miles of NF lands. Plus if you want you can buy your own land to hunt on (IF YOU HAVE A JOB) & want to work. I own land in 6-states! I couldn't find a place to fish hunt so I bought my own and posted it to keep the locals out! They would allow me to hunt so I won't allow them to hunt. Talk about a sour puss bunch!

You can't undo what's been done when you open a Pandora's Box like Corridor H. I've seen it happen before, and there's no going back. Once our farms are broken up, the land sold off in lots, and homes built on them, they will never be restored to what it was. Look at the homes dotting the countryside now. Many of the places I used to hunt and fish are now someone's front yard. Even in the the most secluded areas, homes have been built on land so forbidding it is only accessable by 4-wheel drive.

What happens when the natural beauty of the state has been destroyed by development. Many of the places I once trout fished are now dotted with no trespassing signs, even in some of the most remote areas of the state. If Corridor H is finished, it will be done without my blessings. Imagine how populated it will become after it's finished. We need to stop thinking with our wallets and look at what we have.

Mr. Audy, you sure write pretty and with prose of a learned person. Wish I could rite like this..but you say said it rite. Getting down to what you had says...The road is good (most of it)..but sometimes it do bring bad things which is not our fault. Lawmen need to stop cars like they do in fla., drug cars! Next it the wildlife.. gamewardens need to bust these poachers behinds..arrest them..PDQ. The biggest problem we have is our county! School Levys! Tax's and jobs! We have some in Wv that is awaitin for our land to go for tax's. I can tell that a guy names Mike Ross buys it all. Must have lots of money but everyone protects him? Assessors are not assessing land property its value. Making it higher than it is. So countys get more tax's. If an outsider comes in and buys a house or builds one, assessor thinks its a stampede or goldrush. What a bunch of idiots! And we elect them?

I also would like to finish saying that most of what is going on is within! We are the source of our problems! If we use drugs, suppliers will bring it in! If we allow laws to be passed that is not in our interest (fair) then we are at fault. Voting counts! Yes, the polls tell the story if we are voting! Our kids need to be held accountable as well as ourselves for statehood and living conditions. I much rather have a nice home built beside me than a shack or trailer park that is common in some parts of Wv. But nothing is mentioned since it is us. Things are tough in Wv. The rich get richer and prey upon the poor. I am proud to be a WV native! Stand up for the law and if its not right then lets change it to properly serve us.Not one but all! This road is a good thing! Lets use it to our advantage 2 serve us and not allow those who abuse it.

As I read this posts,it amazes me how fast we rush to the keyboard to write something that is not true, part true or not at all true and rings of bias and untruths. I am a wv mountaineer. Raised in the middle & most rugged part in the worst economic times. This hwy is the best thing ever happening to this state. Million $ homes is not true! Hundreds of homes not true! A few here and there! A few high dollar houses! No big subdivisions! What I hate to see is the timber being cut. DNR stocked coyotes or supposely did. Desimated deer! Disease also! Hunting, poaching, disease, exceeding the limits (all species, fish included). We need to stop the levy's which are mandated by the county commissioners to fill there coffers! Assessments made that are inflated! Favor given to big landowers(timber companys). But not you and me! Drugs..yes we have them big time! Its our fault! I know of kids and parents who supposely use them! Good roads bring good jobs, products, better service!

Xenophobic, hardly. I don't fear them, but that doesn't mean I want them as a neighbor either. You can't keep the natural beauty of an area by having hundreds of newcomers building houses in the areas you want to keep wild. Our isolation is the main factor in keeping this state wild and wonderful. Tourist come here to see the natural wonders of this state, not million dollar homes peppering the countryside. You can't have it both ways. Corridor H will only serve as a pathway for more people moving in, which will detract from the state's natural beauty even more.

Maybe you better find out whose behind the movement to finish Corridor H. It's mainly comprised of people who stand to gain financially from its completion. They're thinking with their wallet, and most of them couldn't care less about the impact it will have on the state and the people who live here. Most tourism jobs are dead end, low paying jobs that offer little opportunity for advancement.

Pure, you do realize your comment is xenophobic and actually a part of why business will not locate in WV right? Why would someone wish to go where they are not wanted by the populous?

I find it interesting that you feel you are the only knowledgeable individual on city socioeconomic factors. Considering you have obvious issues with 'city-slickers,' I would not likely trust your judgment as being unbiased or objective on the subject.

Tort reform is not the main issue IMO. ACTUAL franchise and equipment tax rates assessed by the state are more likely to drive business away opposed to a THREAT of potential lawsuits. If not, why have they been phased to come down over a period of years ending in 2015? I bet business lobbied for these reductions opposed to the 'legislative lawyers' coming up with that plan on their own.

Fellars, I have read all 6 of these posts and AudyHaze speaks the bestest! How do I know, well he is tellin it like it is. I know fer a fact the deer and almost gone, shot and ate and fed to bears for "training". Plus everyone killing more than they shoot as well as catching many, many more trout than they should. Yes, I-81 will be finished and it will allow the interstate transport of alot of things. I do want to tell you something about land values..guess who is selling it.. we are! At that high prices because we don't have that kind of money. Guess who's bank account it goes into...yours! Guess who is getting the gas drilling money..we are! As for someone leaving the state for a better job, well I salute them for gettin a better life. If we are that dumb to stay here and pick sh.t with the chickens, then Stupid is as Stupid Does! Manchin..well I recently got a rude awakening from him.. gun support??? wow..what a loser. Just remember him at the next election. Better roads b

WV, you are wrong on two levels. It's not little Johnny returning to the state that's the problem, it's the people who come here that have never lived here. The job situation isn't helped by people moving here. It will only be fixed when we get rid of the gargoyles in Charleston that have been in the state legislature since Lincoln was a child. We must get Tort Reform in this state and we will never have it as long as we have attorneys in the legislature designing legislation to help their law practice. We will never have industry here to keep our kids at home as long as they know WV will do nothing about frivolous lawsuits.

As for the druggies, there is always someone behind them. I've lived in the big cities and I saw first hand how changing demographics ruined entire neighborhoods in a very short time. Unless you've lived in areas where this is happening, you have no idea how bad it can get.

Complain when little Johnny has to leave home for another state to find work and then complain when Johnny comes home and buys a farm with his out of state pay. Y'all do understand that 'progress' generally = economic growth right? If you want the next generation of Johnny's to stay in WV, you should thank an out-of-stater for providing him with a construction job building those multi-million dollar homes at the resort areas. I know it drives the price of land and homes up, but usually this is concentrated in certain areas.

As to drugs in the area, most of the names I see in the paper getting busted, I recognize as being local-yocols. Perhaps some out-of-state cash flow would help them be productive instead of destructive.

I used to be against the H, now it is so close to being finished, just do so. One ironic twist though, is the praise for Manchin looking at cutting the Fed deficit, while the other side of our mouth asks to continue to feed at the trough.

I have to disagree about the trout and game being gone, and the locals being at fault. A lot of native trout streams were ruined by clear cuts that released tons of silt into the streams. Westvaco caused a lot of this damage. They lease thousands of acres to out of state hunt clubs that in turn, locked locals off these lands.

The clear cuts haven’t been replanted with native species like Oak, Maple and Hickory that once supported game populations and filtered run off flowing into many trout streams. Out-of-state residents, who moved here, bought up large farms and then closed them to local hunters.

I can remember hunting Bob White Quail on the outskirts of Buckhannon, but now much of that land has been converted to housing projects and private homes when the farm's original owners died, and the loss of those farms left game with little to eat.

Wild and Wonderful is quickly becoming "Cramped and Congested", and all in the name of "Progress." Even some of the most isolated areas of the state now sport million dollar homes and townhouses used a few months out of the year by wealthy business people and politicians from NJ, NY and Washington DC.

We're losing something that can't be replaced, our heritage, and it's being done in the name of progress. Everything comes at a price. Are we willing to trade our heritage for a few dollars, leaving our children with a legacy of crime, high real estate prices and high taxes? We need to stop thinking with our wallet and think of the future generations of West Virginians. Let them enjoy what many of is enjoyed over the decades. A legacy of crime, crushing taxes and unaffordable real estate prices isn't much of a legacy to leave your children.

Folks,Folks, Mountaineers; lend me your ears, not your selfishness! I left home in the 60's and have traveled these mountain roads for over 50-yrs. I have seen death, crashes, snow, sleet, ice, rocks, slides & god alful weather. It took me over 5-6hrs to get home. Now what Puremagix says is somewhat truth! I will not try to say otherwise, but with the lawmen we have now and the price of land tripling, everyone is making out. Yes, the trout and game is almost gone! But the locals do the most of it, not the out-of-staters! Drugs OH MAN, your are right on that one! I think Randolph and countys are a direct pipeline! Crime, well its always been here (fighting, stealing)..but it is worse now. We do need this road to bring in the 19th Century.. which is not here yet but is knocking.. 20th is rite behind it.

Screw Corridor H. I've seen enough to convince me that we don't need an influx of dope pushers, criminals and arrogant Yankees coming to West Virginia. I keep hearing everyone connected to the Corridor H project talking about our wild and wonderful state. Well folks, just how wild and wonderful will it be when people flood into the state and create another NYC. Are you people so stupid that you can't realize that our isolation and lack of 4 lane highways is what kept West Virginia wild and wonderful all these years? Change that, and you change the state and transform it into another ding heap like NY, NJ and LA. How many people will some to West Virginia on vacations when our crime rate mirrors those in the big cities? We can already see the results of improved access. Drugs and crime are ten fold what it was 20 years ago. You better get your head out of you ass and reconsider you stance on this one or you'll live to regret it. Stop playing the money people's game, and think it over.
