War on coal creating state budget issues

April 3, 2014

Exports are a key component of West Virginia’s economy — but they were down drastically last year. That does not bode well for state budget planners. During 2012, state businesses exported $11....

You can thank Joe Manchin and Nick Rahall for the budget issue caused by less taxes because of Obama and progressives war on coal!

Stupid men in power are the most dangerous thing on the planet. One stupid fool can do more harm to more people in shorter time than anything else known to man.

Wish democrats would learn how to THINK before passing stupid laws. Appears only they couldn't see this coming from 5 years ago!

So where's yahoo, what, oldblue, nellie, walker...aww...they can no longer come up with anything to defend Obama's war on coal. The left are getting tired and wore out trying to constantly defend the undefendable Obama. lol.

Obama’s War on Coal are far reaching: 300 of America’s coal plants will close due to EPA policies by 2025. That’s 44,000 megawatts of generating capacity in 33 states gone. Electricity rates will “necessarily skyrocket” and grid stability may be threatened.

Check it out Yahoo, the facts are out there is you know where to look.

Yahoo, my information is from the Secretary of State's website. You do know that after so long, the information on revoked and denied permits are takem down. And yes, Obama did say he would make it too expensive to operate a coal fired power plant. He said that from the beginning. Whatever method he uses still equates to a war on coal. I suggest you start researching the issue a little deeper, or stop cherry picking the information you post on here.

To more accurately paraphrase what Obama stated, and provide some context, he was talking about a cap and trade carbon system, which never has happened, and he said that building a NEW coal plant project would cause bankruptcy. He also stated that coal is not out of the energy mix and we should continue to use it as long as it can be cleaner through technology.

To reiterate the larger point, the numerical facts show another story than some people's conception and rhetoric noted as proof of the 'war on coal.'

I did not find 'scores' of permits denied or revoked, I found 1 (Spruce Mine in Logan). If know of others, feel free to share this fact through a source.

That's funny about First/Energy Mon b/c of EPA regs. FE simply journaled the Harrison PS from one subsidiary ledger (Pot-Ed) to the other (Mon Pow). However, I did note where two FE PA plants close, "Based on the cost of compliance with current and future environmental regulations in conjunction with the continued low market price for electricity." So, the reg arguement is a mixed bag at best.

Yahoo, I suggest you do more investigating into what's going on with coal. In WV alone, the EPA has denied scores of permits to mine coal, and it has also revoked permits that had already been approved earlier. First Energy/Mon Power has sold off our coal powered generators due to Obama's EPA policies of impending doom for coal generated electricity. If you remember back to when Obama ran for office, he said he would make it too costly to operate coal powered generators, and he is working on that right now. So yes, there is a war on coal and Obama is waging it.

When truth is spoken, the lefties whine and scream. Truth cuts like a knife and the weak cannot deal with it. Isn't it obvious? Funny.

Yahoo...just because you 'wish' it doesn't make it so. False info and deceit changes nothing.

TG - I didn't pick the years, the Ogden corporate editorial staff did.

The number of small mines have decrease for sure, but mechanization and scale tends to cause higher cost producers out of business. In other words, WY and MT mines are now out-producing higher cost WV mines. Natural gas is also kicking coal out of the steam electric generation.

I have not limited the scope to WV only, as Obama is president of the entire US & b/c the data is more readily available. So, using EIA coal data again, we find that the height of production was 2001 (1,127 Mst) and 1949 (480.6 Mst)the low. From 1994 to 2013 it has remained above 1,033.0 Mst. And, the height of export since 1949 was 2012 and #2 2013. Source: ht t p://w w w.eia.go v/coal/data.cf m#su mmary

How again is Obama waging a war on coal?

Elkins, the cracker plant you speak of is not even a US company. Obama passes legislation dooming the cracker plants in the US, which are US companies, and then we end up with one from outside the US. What does that tell you? And by the way, natural gas is not taking over. There are still many countries that burn coal, and still want it, but the climate change minions are moving to restrict the use of coal worldwide under the lie of climate change. You will soon see how expensive the move from coal will be when your electric rates soar because natural gas does not have the BTU's to produce power as efficiently as coal. We've proved coal can be just as clean as gas with the new technologies, but your buddies on the left would rather strave out the citizens of this country to make $$$$ off their carbon credits.

If people were being honest theres not a war on coal at all the world market is booming for coal and now natural gas has taken off in this state and things are shifting and the jobs with it so the Right wing is still making money off of coal and now the gas industry no one is losing money they are making money!and when WV starts building the Cracker Plant in wood Co another 3000 jobs will come so quit the Fox news lies, give me a break

Yahoo, you can't look at a few years and get an accurate assessment of coal sales in this state. Had you went back to the 80's & 90's, you would see that exports and sales were far higher than they have been in the last few years. You're cherry picking the statistics to make Obama look better, and leaving the boom years in obscurity. I can remember when there were strip mines and deep mines on nearly every back road in the area.

All you saw on the road in the way of trucks were coal trucks. So don't try to blow smoke up our butt about Obama not hurting coal. Don't worry, you'll suffer right along with the rest of us when your electric bill triples or quadruples. There's nothing out there as cheap as coal when producing electricity. Like most Obamanites, you can't see past the end of your nose when it comes to important issued.

Problem is, not one fact was posted. Rather, only someone else's rehashed rhetoric. Simply saying one wishes to see coal power plants minimized in use does not negate the STATISTICAL FACT that the US is in its second highest coal export year and has higher use in 2013 over 2012.

As to EPA 'new' regulations of stationary boilers (e.g. coal power plants) those have been in the works since the Clinton admin. Why are CEOs paid so much if they do not have the skill to ready their company for any reg's known and eventual enactment?

But ignorant people 'choose' to spread lies/deceit for their liberal radical 'agenda.' Democrats are LOSING elections and soon this party of lies, destruction and taxation will be gone and the people will get things back to normalcy again instead of stupid people trying to act like they have an ounce of common sense and proving they don't even know the meaning of the words!!

Next Year, The EPA Plans To Announce Regulations On Existing Coal Plants, “A Far More Costly And Controversial Step.” “Ms. McCarthy also announced a yearlong schedule for an environmental listening tour – a series of meetings across the country with the public, the industry and environmental groups as the agency works to establish emissions limits on existing power plants – a far more costly and controversial step. Mr. Obama has told officials he wants to see greenhouse gas limits on existing and new power plants by the time he leaves office in 2017.” (Michael Shear, “Administration To Press Ahead With Carbon Limits,” The New York Times, 9/20/13)

More radical extremist liberals: Harvard University’s Daniel P. Schrag, One Of Obama’s Advisers On Climate Change, Said “A War On Coal Is Exactly What’s Needed.” “Daniel P. Schrag, a geochemist who is the head of Harvard University’s Center for the Environment and a member of a presidential science panel that has helped advise the White House on climate change, said he hoped the presidential speech would mark a turning point in the national debate on climate change. ‘Everybody is waiting for action,’ he said. ‘The one thing the president really needs to do now is to begin the process of shutting down the conventional coal plants. Politically, the White House is hesitant to say they’re having a war on coal. On the other hand, a war on coal is exactly what’s needed.’” (John M Broder, “Obama To Outline Ambitious Plan To Cut Greenhouse Gases,”The New York Times, 6/25/13)

wvyahoo...I have MORE facts than your false deceitful opinions:

FYI: While Campaigning For President In 2008, Obama Said That His Cap-And-Trade Program Would Bankrupt New Coal-Powered Plants.

OBAMA: “So, if somebody wants to build a coal plant, they can – it’s just that it will bankrupt them, because they are going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.” (Sen. Barack Obama, Interview With The San Francisco Chronicle‘s Editorial Board, 1/17/08)

FYI: •Manchin: The New Regulations “Will Have Devastating Impacts To The Coal Industry And Our Economy.” “‘Never before has the federal government forced an industry to do something that is technologically impossible,’ said Senator Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat. ‘Forcing coal to meet the same emissions standards as gas when experts know that the required technology is not operational on a commercial scale makes absolutely no sense and will have devastating impacts to the coal industry and our economy.’” (Mark Drajem, “New Coal Plants Must Limit Carbon Pollution Under Epa Regulation,” Bloomberg Businessweek, 9/20/13) Best defense? No surprise that this is another Ogden anti-Obama hit piece. Problem is the facts are skewed to fit a your adgenda. While WV has decreased coal production from 12-13 US, "Coal exports totaled nearly 118 million short tons (MMst) in 2013, the second-highest total ever for U.S. coal exports." Source: *******w w w .eia.g o v /forecasts/steo/report/coal.c f m So, that means 2012 was the high year and this was chosen to purposely cause an emotional response opposed to a rationale one. Also, US demand increased from 12-13 889,185 to 925,106 short tons. h tt p://w ww.eia.g ov/coal/prod uction/quar terly/ (Table 32) So, we increased our use and are in the second highest production year. Care to share how this equates to a war on coal?
