As a youngster growing up in the 1950s, I believed what they promised. I answered the call to rally, marching in a straight line into Sunday school, singing Onward Christians soldiers, marching as to war, pumped my legs high because I believed I was protected that if I worked hard enough, I would always be protected.

I started to smell the hint of a scam in 1966 when I marched myself off to a war game in Vietnam. By then, I began to understand that the political leaders only wanted me to do their bidding so they could get richer and the protection I was providing was of their wealth.

Once you open your eyes, you can read the signs everywhere, and there's no going back. Realizing that the education I worked so hard to get, I was the only one to go to college in my family, was not my ticket out because I would never buy into a system that left me feeling like I never wanted to enter their workforce at all.

But I had to eat. Over the years, I've worked in construction management and higher education, living from paycheck to paycheck for many years.

That brings me back to that promise from the 50s. That promise, I worked so hard for my whole life and have certainly been used and abused while on the job. I am not rich; I can enjoy old age and will be taken care of in retirement by Social Security, right? Hardly!

To be honest, thirty years ago when, Ronald Reagan gave us Public Law 98-21, which extended the age when you can collect the full amount of Social Security retirement benefits. I didn't much think about it. But I surely did in 2000 when the law went into effect, and I was notified I couldn't collect full Social Security benefits until age 66 (as opposed to age 62), and would get more benefits if I worked until age 70.

Once again I realized I was on my own that protection in their system was only for them. This solution for retirement is just another inadequate term for a life sentence.

I have only a nominal pension to survive on. I have lived a simple life putting what savings I was able to afford into a supplement plan to my Social Security. Even so, I don’t have much of a protected life on the horizon.

With both Social Security and my current medical diagnosis, I feel like I've been placed between the proverbial rock and a hard place. Instead of enjoying my golden years, I'm scrambling to beat the odds closing in on me.

But, you know, I'm not despondent. As I drive my 7-year-old car, I glance over and see a homeless man pushing his cart for the day. And I think: I know that many of us are better or worse off. The struggle for us all, though, is the same since we all have the same enemy. I know I have the structure so that I can reach out a hand to that homeless man and we can struggle together. I know that I can march again, but this time, I'm marching to liberation. Yeah, I think that's how I'll spend my golden years.

Yeah, remember when Obama and democrats told Republicans that if they didn't get their socialist policies through congress that they would "WITHHOLD all military paychecks, social security checks, disability checks????

Democrats today are a wicked intolerable, ignorant, unintelligent, unsympathetic bunch of money worshippers, intent on taking more of the poor's money through higher taxes and intent on destroying all your constitutional rights. And if you don't believe that, they're already starting it through the IRS discriminatory acts against ANYONE who dares speak out against their communist policies and using the NSA that they PRETENDED they hated when Bush started it, by going even further in spying on law-abiding citizens in our own country!

Now, do you understand WHY they want to take your guns away? IMAGINE the horror of what these wicked people would do to you then!!!

Which is just one more of many cuts Democrats make that PROVES they care nothing about disabled folks, senior citizens UNLESS it's an election year; then let the LIES begin!!!

When will senior citizens wake up to the FACT that democrat policies harm them? Yet they continue to believe all the democrats' campaign lies over and over again. Every election democrats' lie and say conservative Republicans will take their ss away; well Bush got in office; did he take your social security away? NO he did not and never had any intentions of doing so. But stupid, low-information voters who will 'willingly' believe a LIE continue believing lies even after proof they were lies! Until 'people' start using some common sense, these wicked lefties will continue depriving you of what you've earned by raising taxes more and taking more of your meager earnings and continue zapping you of all your rights until it's too late. I guess then they'll wake up? Well we are now experiencing the bad effects of i

Sure Democrats. Do what Obama does. The only things he ever cuts are programs to help the elderly or our veterans. Just today, a lady got on TV showing a letter from the VA two years after he had died waiting for treatment for a brain tumor. In the letter, they wanted her to contact the VA to schedule an appointment to set up treatment options for husband's tumor.

Can you believe that? The man had been dead for two years and they're just now getting around to setting him an appointment. Wake up folks. This is a look into what's coming for Obamacare. They won't deny you treatment, they'll just wait you out. You'll get put on a list, and you'll die waiting on the treatment you need. How many veterans have died while the VA spent untold sums of money installing solar panels, money that was slated to help our veterans? Now who's wrong? Manchin for praising the VA or Capito for condemning them? That should be a no brainer if I ever saw one.
