Traditionally the property room or property component in most law enforcement agencies is a low priority in terms of operations, staffing, and resource allocation. I once heard a police chief when asked. Just what does the property room staff do? Replied, oh they put crap on a shelf.

When Police departments view the property room as a place to assign disgruntled employees or recovering alcoholics or another problem the property room becomes a penalty box. Or even worse the property room is staffed with civilian employees who have had minimal, if any, background investigation.

Often, these civilian employees are the lowest paid employees within the organization. Whether sworn or civilian, the property room employees are given unescorted access to drugs, currency, firearms, etc.

SURELY, there is a chain of custody, for a MURDER WEAPON in a MURDER case? SURELY!

Heads should ROLL, and not just the head of the murderer.

Oh how convenient! Sounds like someone within the department is taking cues from Lois Lerner's IRS "lost emails" and EPA's excuse, "lost emails."

The dept responsible should be held accountable for this. And probably Demoted or fired. Somehow I think it wasn't 'lost' accidentally.
