WELCH, W.Va. (AP) — The trial of a woman accused of killing War Mayor Thomas Hatcher is underway in McDowell County Circuit Court.
Rebecca Hatcher of War is charged with first-degree murder in the death of the mayor, who was her father-in-law.
The Bluefield Daily Telegraph (http://bit.ly/1iIe6fO ) reports that the defense began its case Monday. An expert witness, Dr. William Manion, testified that he believes Thomas Hatcher died of natural causes.
City workers found the 72-year-old mayor's body in his home on July 17, 2012.
A co-defendant, Earl Click of Grundy, Va., is scheduled to stand trial in January. Click is Hatcher's brother. He also is charged with first-degree murder.
