Buckhannon-Upshur Set to Begin Lacrosse Play This Spring

By ANDREW DAVIS,Staff Writer
Buckhannon-Upshur High School is on track to begin a lacrosse program for boys and girls beginning this spring.

Nine other West Virginia schools currently have lacrosse teams. Those are Fairmont Senior, Linsly School, Morgantown, St. Albans, University, Wheeling Central, Wheeling Park, Bridgeport and George Washington.

Close to 145 students at B-U signed up to compete in the new sport

“The 145 kids that signed up wouldn’t be playing any other spring sport,” said Matt Gillespie. “I’m just amazed on how many kids showed interest in the program. We have 10 percent of the school population interested in playing lacrosse.”

Gillespie is slated to be head coach for the boys team with Beth Lampinen guiding the girls squad.

Practices are expected to begin at the end of February with games getting under way in April.

Buckhannon-Upshur’s home games will be played at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Field.

“We are hoping to get a four-team tournament as well during the season,” said Gillespie.

Buckhannon-Upshur has already started a boosters for lacrosse to help raise money for expenses.

“We are in the process of raising enough money for this year,” said Gillespie. “The community has been real positive about starting the lacrosse teams.”

West Virginia Wesleyan is having a clinic Nov. 17 for anyone interested in learning the sport.
