BOE Approves Field Trips, Chaperones

January 9, 2008
By ANTHONY GAYNOR, Staff Writer
The Randolph County Board of Education approved three field trips and a list of chaperones during its first meeting of 2008 on Monday.

The BOE gave approval for four Elkins Middle School band students and five Elkins High School band students to travel to Blacksburg,Va., to take part in an honor band at Virginia Tech University. The students’ trips will be paid for by the students and GEAR-UP funding.

The third trip approved by the BOE was for EHS FFA members to attended a national tractor show. The trip will be paid for by FFA funds at no cost to the board.

According to Hinzman, the students going on all three trips will have to make up the school they miss.

The BOE entered a brief executive session over a personnel matter. No decisions were made.

Director of Secondary Education Terry George informed the board that he was working on bid specifications for security-related projects at Elkins High School, Randolph Technical Center and Midland Elementary School.

John Daniels, director of facilities and transportation, told the board that work at Valley Head Elementary School is nearing completion.

The kitchen was expected to be painted on Tuesday and the only work left would be in the office, maintenance room and in the upstairs girl’s bathroom. When the work is completed, Daniels said there would be enough room in the school for the modular building to no longer be used and the asbestos problems at VHES would go away with the buildings.

The next Randolph County BOE meeting will be at 6 p.m. Jan. 22. The meeting was scheduled for Jan. 21, however, school is not in session that day. The BOE decided to move the meeting and give employees the day off.
