POSTED: February 16, 2008

The first time Doug and Shelley Harper sang together, their voices came together like two old friends. Since then, their partnership has taken them on a musical journey throughout central Appalachia.

Their travels will bring them to the Pocahontas County Opera House in Marlinton today for a performance at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 and can only be purchased at the door. Children age 12 and younger will be admitted free.

“Hybrid Folk” is a term coined to describe Doug’s writing style and play list. Audiences come away from their performances warmed, amused and inspired. The Harpers have performed at venues throughout West Virginia, including West Virginia Public Radio’s Mountain Stage, Tamarack, Theatre West Virginia’s Music in the Mountains and The Clay Center in Charleston. Their recording projects include “Scrapbook” (2000), “Travelogue” (2002), “Seasons” (2004) and “Keepsakes” (2007).

The Harpers were invited to perform two cuts on “The Road Home” and one cut on “The Road Home II,” compilations of songs by West Virginia songwriters produced by Ron Sowell, music director for Mountain Stage.

The Harpers will be joined by Dave Fondale on bass and one of West Virginia’s most accomplished dobro players, Chris Stockwell. Fondale, a native of Crab Orchard, has been playing electric and acoustic guitar since 1967. He has played with various local musicians around the Beckley area in rock, contemporary Christian, country and folk styles. Stockwell is from Birch River. He has only been playing for five years and is already one of the most sought after dobro players in the region. He performs with the Harpers when he can fit in with his gigs with the Johnny Staats Project.

The Pocahontas County Opera House is located at 818 Third Ave. in Marlinton. Those with disabilities are encouraged to attend. Special seating can be arranged by calling in advance. In the event of snow or ice, call to confirm that the concert is still scheduled.

For more information, call the Opera House at 799-6645 or the Pocahontas County Convention & Visitors Bureau at 1-800-336-7009.
