D&E?Students in Free Enterprise?Team Competes in RegionalsMay 19, 2008
The Davis & Elkins College SIFE team competed at the Charlotte, N.C., SIFE USA Regional Competition, one of 16 SIFE USA Regional Competitions held across the United States in March and April.
SIFE is an international nonprofit organization active on more than 1,400 university campuses in 48 countries. SIFE teams create economic opportunities in its communities by organizing outreach projects that teach: Market economics, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, success skills and business ethics. SIFE’s projects are judged by business leaders at competition on creativity, innovation and effectiveness. During this academic year, the Davis & Elkins SIFE team organized projects at YouthBuild, the Elkins Mountain, School, the Highland Adventist School and for local businesses. A grant of $5,000 was awarded from the Marcus Foundation to support teaching the “Entrepreneurship Initiative” to low-income, at-risk youth. Also, a $1,000 grant was awarded from the Appalachian College Association to a team member to facilitate technology initiatives resulting in stronger digital skills on campus and for team community projects. The D&E SIFE Web site was updated to support the team’s sustainability goals. The 2008 SIFE USA National Exposition will be held in Chicago, Illinois, May 13-15. |
