Students, faculty and staff at West Virginia Wesleyan College are mourning the death of a student who was killed by an apparent drunken driver. The hit and run accident Wednesday in Buckhannon claimed the life of Daniel Duncan, 18, of Norwalk, Ohio.
According to a prepared statement from the Upshur County Sheriff's Department, Duncan was riding a bicycle along state Route 20 in Hinkleville when he was struck by a pickup truck traveling south. The truck fled the scene of the accident.
Deputies later located the vehicle in Adrian, and consequently arrested Roger Lee Harrison Jr. of French Creek. He was charged with an accident involving personal injury or death in addition to driving under the influence resulting in death. Both charges are felonies.
Harrison is currently lodged in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail awaiting arraignment.
"This is a terrible tragedy," said Bob Skinner, director of marketing and communication for Wesleyan. "He was a bright student with great promise and talent. We are truly saddened by the loss."
According to Skinner, Duncan was in the honors program and a member of the concert chorale, the jazz ensemble and the cycling club.
Lead investigator in the case is Sgt. Marshall Powers who was assisted by Deputy 1st Class Dewaine Linger, the Upshur County Emergency Squad and the Adrian and Buckhannon Fire Departments.
