When Sara Harris' 12-year career in day care ended, her desire to open a bakery began. Her mother-in-law, Bernice Harris, urged her saying, "With all the baking you do, you should open a bakery."
With the help of her husband, Jason, and children Samuel, Jared and Katie, Sarah Harris did just that. The Cookie Jar is now open for business. An open house and ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for 1 p.m. Friday to welcome customers and show off the new venture.
"Something for us to do as a family" is Sarah Harris' description of the new business. Jason Harris contributed to the design and installation of the furnishings, as well as giving the name to the new bakery. His father, Jimmy Harris, also helped with renovations. Sara Harris created the table cloths and curtains and made aprons for her sons to wear in the shop.
The Cookie Jar, by Sara Harris' description, "is the sweetest place in town." Located at 1402 Crim Ave. in the Greystone Plaza, across from the Industrial Park in Belington, the new bakery has a wide variety of cookies, donuts, pies, breads, cakes and candies for the sweet tooth and sugar free items for other preferences. Hot dogs and foot longs will be served and in the very near future. Soups will be added to the menu. Specials are planned on a weekly basis. Hours are Tuesdays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The business is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Orders can be made by calling 823-1900.
Visitors are welcome to put their "hands in the cookie jar" in order to enter a prize drawing. The jar will be available until Friday when the open house takes place and winners will be selected from the names deposited in the jar.
