Philippi police arrested a Granville man Monday after several businesses filed complaints saying the man attempted to obtain more change than he was due after making a purchase.
Timothy James Martisko, 27, was arraigned in Barbour County Magistrate Court on six charges of obtaining money by false pretenses. According to police, Philippi merchants said Martisko would either distract or confuse a cashier in an attempt to get the additional money.
In a prepared statement, the Philippi Police Department told business owners to always be "aware of fraudulent schemes such as these."
Martisko was placed under a $6,000 bond and is currently incarcerated in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail.
