Grammy-nominated artist on tap for Augusta concert on Thursday

The sounds of Cajun and early country music will echo from the stage as Augusta puts on it second concert of the summer season at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Harper-McNeeley Auditorium on the Davis & Elkins College campus. The traditional music concert will feature performances by Carol McComb, Blake Miller and Cedric Watson, Jesse Lege, Kristi Guillory and Bill Kirchen.

Kirchen is a Grammy-nominated singer, guitarist and songwriter whose music draws upon the origins of country in blues and bluegrass. He is best known as the lead guitarist and singer of the band Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen.

Guillory may be small in stature, but she can play accordion like a big rice-fed country boy, organizers said. Guillory grew up watching her guitarist grandfather, Jesse Duhon, who played with Octa Clark and the Dixie Ramblers during the 1930s. When she was 10 years old, she found the accordion and began playing Cajun. She loves the sad Cajun songs, the raunchy drinking ones and the fantastical lyrics of old Cajun a cappella ballads.

Concert admission is $10 for adults and $8 for seniors older than 60 and youth younger than 12. A Cajun dance will be hosted in the pavilion immediately following the concert with music by Cedric Watson and Bijou Creole. Dance admission is $5 per person but concert attendees may dance for free. There will also be a dance at 8 p.m. Friday in the dance pavilion with music by both Edward Poullard & Friends and Paul Daigle.

Next week's concerts will feature many of the nation's great blues musicians. The following weeks' concerts will feature Irish, bluegrass, swing, and old-time vocal and dance performances.
