Adaland Mansion in Philippi plans autumn events
Summer weddings and historic guided tours have occupied visitors to Adaland this year. As fall begins, a special series of events have been planned for the public.
Newsletters have been sent out to persons on the mailing list and events are listed online at www.adaland.org under the calendar of events.

On Friday, a reception will be at Adaland sponsored by Alderson-Broaddus College alumni beginning at 6 p.m.
Guests are encouraged to arrive after 3 p.m. for a free guided tour of the mansion house. For more information contact the A-B Alumni Office.
At 11:30 a.m. Oct. 10, a buffet lunch will be served at Adaland for guests. The cost is $15 per person and reservations must be made. The lunch is available for individuals or a small group.
Oct. 18 will mark the beginning of traditional holiday Sunday buffet dinners for Adaland. The dinner begins at noon and ends at 4 p.m.
A variety of entrees along with side dishes, drinks and desserts are available. Reservations are required and are made for families as well as couples and individuals.
The cost is $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 6 to 12.
A homemade breakfast buffet will be served beginning at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 31. The menu includes sausage and gravy, eggs, potatoes, homemade biscuits, fruit, ham, juice and coffee along with other country treats cooked by Rose and Joyce Frey.
The cost is $15 per person. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 304-457-2415.
Adaland will also host Sunday holiday buffets Nov. 15 and Dec. 13. Both events are from noon to 4 p.m. and require reservations to attend. Traditional holiday foods will be served.
The cost per person for the buffet is $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 6 to 12. An evening buffet dinner will be served Dec. 31.

Adaland Mansion will begin the annual Christmas celebration Nov. 15 when volunteers and staff join to decorate every room in the mansion house for the enjoyment of special guests. Holiday dinners, luncheons and special events are planned in addition to historic guided tours.
Last year, more than 600 people visited the mansion during the Christmas season and an article about the celebration was featured in December 2008 issue of Wild, Wonderful West Virginia.
A Christmas Open House with free admission will be Dec. 5 and 6 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Refreshments will be sold.
The gift shop at Adaland is open for all special events and on tour days. A variety of handmade items are available from local crafters. White oak baskets by Monzel Anglin Jr. of Philippi are one of the featured items along with pottery by Kevin Williamson, purses by the McCoy sisters, hand-blown glass witch balls by Appalachian Glass, church dolls, Raggerty Ann and Andy dolls, homemade soap, loom-woven rugs and handmade jewelry.
Books by local authors are also available for purchase.
