Elkins hosting regional cross country championship today
Staff ReportsThe Elkins High School cross country team will host the Class AAA, Region II championship today at Davis & Elkins College's Harpertown Field.
The girls race will begin at 1:30 p.m. with the boys race to follow at 2:15 p.m.
The top 10 individual boys and girls, along with the top three girls teams and top four boys teams will advance to the state meet which will be held Oct. 31 at Cabell Midland High School in Ona.
Bridgeport, Buckhannon-Upshur, Hampshire County, Hedgesville, Jefferson, Lewis County, Martinsburg, Musselman, Robert C. Byrd and Washington will compete in the meet.
Two-time regional and state champion Letitia Propst from Elkins will lead the girls field. Jefferson's Alyssa Boucher and Andrea Nickerson will challenge for the title.
Jefferson is a favorite take home the the team crown. Hampshire, Buckhannon-Upshur and Bridgeport will also look to have strong showings.
The top runner on the boys side will be Brandon Doughty from Jefferson. Other strong runners include Elkins' Ben Proudfoot, Musselman's Austin Rigsby and B-U's Justin Miller.
Jefferson looks to be the favorite in the boys race. Elkins and Hamsphire County will also look to make a run at the team title.
