First phase H1N1 vaccines available today, Wednesday
The Upshur-Buckhannon Health Department and Upshur County Schools have scheduled the first phase of the H1N1 vaccinations for Upshur County's targeted populations.
Intranasal vaccinations will be administered from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at the health department for healthy children and health care workers ages 2 to 49.
Immunocompromised vaccinations will be given from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Buckhannon-Upshur High School for pregnant females and persons with low immunity ages 4 to 24.
The target populations are based on recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control.
Persons with the following health conditions are considered immunocompromised and can receive the vaccine at the clinic Wednesday: Cancer, blood disorder (sickle cell disease), chronic lung disorders (asthma, COPD), diabetes, heart disease, kidney disorders, liver disorders, neurological disorders (epilepsy, cerebral palsy and mental retardation), neuromuscular disorders (multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy), weakened immune system (HIV, AIDS), people on medication that weaken the immune system (i.e. steroids) and gastrointestinal disorders (Crohn's disease).
No intranasal vaccinations will be administered Wednesday.
Vaccinations will be issued on a first-come, first-serve basis, subject to availability. Students should wear appropriate, loose-fitting clothing preferably short sleeved shirts on the day of the clinic.
Consent is needed to administer the vaccination and forms will be available at the clinics. Children younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The health department and Upshur County Schools are continuing to partner with community public safety agencies to schedule more clinics. Subsequent clinics will be announced through local media. The scheduling of subsequent clinics is subject to the receipt and availability of the H1N1 vaccine.
