Vandals damage Beverly Cemetery

The oldest public cemetery west of the Allegheny Mountains has been struck by vandals. The Beverly Cemetery is the final resting place for former West Virginia Gov. Herman Guy Kump, architect Lemuel Chenoweth and numerous veterans from every war except the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

According to Beverly Cemetery Association Vice President Harry Marson, this is not the first time vandals have left their mark on the cemetery. Recently, they have tipped over headstones, spray painted "DRB" on the entrance and stolen tops off the fence posts. Marson said he has heard that the DRB stands for Dotson Run Boys.

"We hope anyone with any information will call the Randolph County Sheriff's Department tip line," Marson said. "We are trying to come up with money to fix some of the old headstones, but it does not help when vandals come through."

The Beverly Cemetery Association has worked through private donations striving to make it like a traditional Civil War cemetery. Marson said it has become a very sentimental place to many people in the area.

"If the person who did this will come to us and make it right, we will consider it," Marson said. "We could have them do some work around the cemetery."

Marson said the association is offering a $500 reward for any information that leads to the vandals being caught. Anyone with any information can call the tip line at 304-636-TIPS (8477).

DRB stands for Dotson Run Boys. hmmmm shouldn't is stand for Disturbed Rotten Brats?

Any person who would vandalize a cemetery has to be disturbed and in need of professional help.

If my child wasa one of the persons to do this crime to a cemetary I guarentee they w ould not only pay wioth money, but with hyde too, and then I w ould turn them over to the olice to do with as they have to do. This is totally senseless to do to a cemetary. dodson Run carries a name for many reasons. I know this and i do not even live near there. Usually the same offenders that never get caught in theior handy work. What a shame this is. I pray theya re caught and brought to justice SOON.

this past summer Beverly was plaguesd with grafhiti and egging of buildings..a certain group of young men that can't seem to be caught are the culprits and the WVSP are wokring to do just that...shame is that the town is working really hard to improve the town and this just frustrates them...The Cemetary Association has worked really hard to install the new fence and make repairs to many of the stones in the older section of the property..I'm all for making them work it off and pay restitution if they can be caught....anyone with valid info can call Trooper Kopec at WVSP (he has a file...) I'm tired of cleaning up after these delinquents!

Anyone with the guts to vandalize a cemetery needs more than to work to fix it. Maybe if they spend some time than they might learn and i think they should pay to fix it not there parents. If there old enough to do the crime then there old enough to pay for it,
