WCTU to meet Nov. 10 in Thomas
There will be an organizational meeting of the Tucker County Woman's Christian Temperance Union at 7 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Mountain Top Senior Center on Second Street in Thomas.
The WCTU was founded Nov. 18, 1874, and is the oldest woman's group still in existence today. Its motto is "For God, Home and Everyland."
The group's objectives are to protect the home and community, to build public sentiment for sobriety, to promote good citizenship, to instill Christian principles into the character of our children, to inform society about the values of total abstinence by providing scientific facts concerning the nature and effects of alcohol and other drugs, and to promote just and fair laws.
One of the group's biggest projects is Youth Temperance Education Week in April. Coloring, poster and essay contests are promoted in schools across America and around the world.
This is a wonderful and rewarding organization, a spokesperson said. To become a member, people need to sign a total abstinence pledge and pay dues. Men are also welcomed as "honorary members." Those who cannot sign the total abstinence pledge can be a friend, project manager or just a supporter of WCTU. Please pray about your involvement.
