Stewart sees positives in loss to Bulls
JOHN WICKLINE, Staff WriterMORGANTOWN -West Virginia University football coach Bill Stewart said a lot of positive things showed up on the sheets of statistics after the loss to South Florida this past Friday.
"But a stat sheet doesn't win a football game," Stewart said Sunday. "We just have to get better, strain harder and stay together. I mean that sincerely, stay together."
WVU, 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big East Conference, have a week to make those corrections before hosting Louisville at noon Saturday in Morgantown. The game will be carried by the Big East Conference Network.
"I think we're playing pretty good football," Stewart said. "We got beat by a team that has good athletes, and right now, has the same record as us. I wish we were 7-1 and they were 5-3."Are we a juggernaut right now? No, we're not, but I saw a lot of good things.
We're not as good as we need to be. We have made a lot of good plays, and we have had some good times this season.
I hope we have more good times and more good plays left in us in all three phases of the game."
Stewart said he plans on showing the game film to the players and pointing out the problems without any finger pointing at any particular players.
"That's not the way I operate, nor do my coaches," he said. "That ball game did not rest on (Keith Tandy) because there are 10 other guys out there that can be getting better pressure, breaking on the ball.
It's just frustrating, and it hurts you sometimes when they have a fast guy who can
run by you. We're playing our best 11 - I don't play favorites - I play the best 11 at all times."
Stewart said the loss was a "team loss," involving the entire travel party to South Florida."We have to regroup and get ready for the stretch run," the coach said.
"That's what it's about from here on out."
