Girl Scouts is "going green" through its leadership development books in the new "Journeys" series. This year's series, entitled "It's Your Planet - Love It!," focuses on the environment. The books, written for Girl Scouts and non-Girl Scouts alike, are being used by Tucker County Girl Scouts.
"If you are a girl in grades K-12 these books and Girl Scouts are for you," a spokesperson said.
These books, which encourage girls to play an active part in planning and decision-making, center on a different theme each year. This year's collection tackles issues like preserving the world's water supply, creating innovations in energy usage, how food network and food choices impact the environment and even forming an equation for what it will take to bring about environmental justice in our world. In every journey, girls accept a challenge to take the lead in protecting the planet.
"It's Your Planet-Love It!" promotes healthy living, collaborative learning and an interest in careers such as science, technology, engineering and math. The books' activities include outdoor adventures, hands-on science investigations and opportunities to "meet" prominent women and girls who are at work around the world on behalf of the environment. As girls journey through the challenges in the books, they earn Girl Scouting's prestigious new leadership pins and badges.
"Girl Scouts of the USA talked to girls and asked them what issues are most important to them and received an overwhelming response that protecting the environment is a top priority for young people," said Beth Casey, COO of Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council. "This journey introduces girls to a broad range of environmental concerns and empowers them to make an impact in their own communities."
Girl Scouts of the USA is the pre-eminent leadership development organization for girls, with 3.7 million youth and adult members worldwide.
Founded in 1912, Girl Scouting is the leading authority on girls' healthy development and leadership. Black Diamond Council serves 20,000 girls in West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio and Maryland.
