WVIAC women to open play
D&E, A-B and WVW? all tip off season todayBy ANDREW?DAVIS, Staff Writer
Division II women's basketball action will tip off tonight with three area teams taking to the hardwood for their openers.
Games on tap include: Davis & Elkins at Concord, West Virginia Wesleyan at Mercyhurst and Alderson-Broaddus at Clarion University for tourney play.
Davis & Elkins, which finished with a 5-22 mark last season under coach Jason Asbell, returns its leading scorer in senior guard Lindsay Holliday. Holliday averaged 13.0 ppg and led the team in three pointers last year with 89.
"We're expect a lot from Lindsay," said Asbell who enters his second season.
Also returning with experience will be seniors Jennifer Thomas, Keri Dennison, Teonna Jewell (12.1 ppg) and Holley Hutchison.
Juniors Allison Bruce, Natasha Pupic and Courtney Bunner, along with sophomores Lea Fletcher and Victoria Lyles, also return with experience.
Freshmen Shalisa Hill, Page Turner, Luci Legaspi, and junior college transfer Julieanne Buckley, will look to contribute this year for the Lady Senators.
"We're expecting big things from Shalisa Hill right away," said Asbell. "She's had a great preseason."
Alderson-Broadduas will look to make some noise this season with the return of six regulars from last year's 14-14 team.
The Lady Battlers will have to replace leading scorer, Chelsea Kuehner, from last year, but senior forward Tori Charley returns and looks capable of improving on last season's 11-point per game average.
Also returning with experience will be seniors Lauren Reed, Alese Davis, Courtney Ginsburg, Amanda Harris and Caitlyn Brown.
"We need leadership from the girls we have back," said Alderson-Broaddus coach Josh Allen. "They've all worked really hard in the offseason."
The Lady Battlers will also look to Amber Bismark, who sat out last year with a knee injury to step in. Bismark is a former Philip Barbour High School standout.
Newcomers Ciara Riggleman, Ashley Price, Kristin Hutson, Amanda Peoples, Britini Shriver and Cayla Rhodes to see sometime this year. Riggleman led Tygarts Valley in scoring last season, while Shriver was a top performer for Philip Barbour.
"We have a good group of kids," said Allen. "We just need to work at it and we should be in good shape."
Wesleyan, meanwhile, returns two seniors from last season's 20-10 team.
The Lady Bobcats, who have big shoes to fill with graduation All-American Sarah Van Horn, will look to seniors Sarah Tokodi and Angela Tassari, and sophomore guard Lydia Bridenbaugh to carry the load. Bridenbaugh was second on the team in scoring a year ago.
Freshmen Megan Campbell, Maya Pollock, Valerie Jasper and Brianna Welch will look to contribute.
