Area checking stations have gotten off to a slow start but are expecting a big day for the first day of buck season. While many area stores have been busy with hunters buying supplies, only one of several stations had checked in a deer by 8 a.m. today.
"We have been very busy," Valley Head Country Store employee Joe Arbogast said. "We checked in one deer this morning, a big eight point."
An employee at Bobbies Texaco in Beverly said the morning was busy with hunters coming in, but no deer have been checked in. Camden's Corner Mart in Dryfork, Mountaineer Mart in Norton and the Par Mar on U.S. 33 east in Elkins had not checked in deer. However, employees from all the stores said it was still early in the day and they expect the hunters to bring in bucks later .
Bill's Place on Adolph Road said they have been extremely busy this morning and during the weekend.
"We sold over 200 licenses this weekend so they (hunters) are out there," owner Bill Conrad said. "We have not checked in anything yet, it is just too early. Around 3 p.m. is when we will get busy."
Belington Exxon had not checked in a deer by 8 a.m., according to a spokesperson for the store. Although this is the first year Belington Exxon is checking station, an employee said he expects to check in 15 to 20 and thinks it is out of the ordinary to not have a deer brought in yet.
