WESTON?- A quick start and 23 points from Elly Schumacher allowed Elkins to roll past Lewis County 65-24 Wednesday night in both teams' season opener.

Schumacher scored nine of the Lady Tigers' first 13 points as the visitors stormed out to a 13-4 lead to start the contest.

Elkins, which led 18-5 after one quarter of play, began the second stanza on a 13-7 run as Catie Riggleman's layin at the 2:05 mark pushed the lead 31-12. Schumacher scored six points during the surge and the Lady Tigers went on to lead 31-16 at intermission.

"We jumped out on them early," said Elkins coach Nancy Lewis. "Lewis County started the game in a zone defense and we were able to knock down some shots."

Elkins held the Minutemaids to just two points in the third quarter as its lead swelled to 44-18 entering the final canto.

The Lady Tigers outscored Lewis County 21-6 in the fourth quarter to finish things up.

Schumacher also gathered seven rebounds and came away with five steals to go with her game high.

"Elly really played well for us, especially in the first quarter," said Lewis. " She had an overall good game."

Jordan Isenhart followed Schumacher in the scoring column with 12 points. She also dished out five assists. Morgan Johnson chipped in with nine points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for the Lady Tigers.

Catie Riggleman and Taira Gainer added six points each for Elkins. Riggleman also had nine caroms.

Rachel Montgomery tossed in 11 points to lead Lewis County. Lisa Hayhurst followed with five points.

"This was a good way to start the season," said Lewis. "We were able to get everyone in the game, which also helps."

Elkins also cruised in the junior varsity contest, winning 51-17.

Haylee Miller had 10 points and Jaime Miller nine.

Elkins will host Robert C. Byrd on Friday.
