Police: Mother, son stole purse, used credit cards

By CARRA HIGGINS, Staff Writer
POSTED: December 7, 2009

A Beverly man and his mother were taken into custody for their alleged involvement in stealing a woman's purse and using her credit cards to purchase more than $1,700 worth of merchandise.

Michael D. Shannon, 39, is charged with seven counts of fraudulent use of a credit card, petit larceny, receiving and transferring stolen goods and contributing to the delinquency of a child. He is also facing five counts of forgery and uttering.

Carolyn Sue Shannon, 59, has been charged with receiving and transferring stolen goods and contributing to the delinquency of a child.

Michael Shannon allegedly took the purse from a woman at Wal-Mart without her knowledge.

When the victim alerted the credit companies, she was told that a person was making a purchase at Elza's Cycle Shop on the Beverly Five-lane. The Randolph County Sheriff's Department responded to the store where they found Michael Shannon with ATV tires he had purchased.

Sheriff's deputies found Carolyn Shannon in possession of the victim's wallet.

The sheriff's department has recovered approximately $1,500 in merchandise Shannon allegedly purchased.

Michael Shannon is incarcerated at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail and Carolyn Shannon has been released.

I know a little bit about this incident, my question would be why were stores letting a man use this card when it clearly had a womans name on it. At best he should have been made shown he was related to this victim by marriage or such, I dont like the hassle sometimes of showing I.D. but in retrospect it is also for our protection. So local businesses neeed to watch closer about our security and not so much about thier profits !!!
