Applying early for college can reap financial benefits

POSTED: December 17, 2009

High school seniors who apply for college admission before Jan. 15 reap financial benefits. At least that is what West Virginia Wesleyan College officials are saying.

Wesleyan, which has the largest private financial aid budget in the state, offers a number of scholarships with February and March deadlines.

"We encourage students and their parents to complete the admission process in December and early January, so they will not miss out on several lucrative scholarship opportunities," said John Waltz, director of admission.

The college's first round of scholarship offers is sent along with the offer of admission.

"The Wesleyan Merit Award, Dean's Scholarship and Presidential Scholarship range from $11,000 to $15,000 per year," Waltz said. "The scholarship application requirements are the same as for admission to the college. The requirements include completing the application for admission and the submission of an official high school transcript and ACT or SAT scores. The first scholarship offer dramatically reduces the out-of-pocket costs for students."

Wesleyan's total direct costs are $29,680, but many West Virginia students pay significantly less thanks to the PROMISE Scholarship, state and federal grants, Wesleyan's scholarship program and other scholarships.

"One of the major benefits for students who apply early is that we can inform them of other financial aid opportunities," said Waltz. "We also offer scholarships that recognize talent in the performing and visual arts and athletics, scholarships for students who want to pursue community service in college, United Methodist Scholarships, scholarships for selected majors, and awards that are based on geographic location. In addition, there are outside scholarships such as the Mason Crickard Scholarship that can also make a Wesleyan education extremely affordable. Some of these have February and March 1 deadlines. We review every application carefully so we can make students aware of the vast range of scholarship opportunities."

Waltz also encourages students to work carefully with their high school guidance counselor.

"There are many community scholarship opportunities, especially in West Virginia," Waltz said. "Students and parents should attend the various financial aid nights at their schools or meet with their guidance counselor to make sure they know about the various awards and deadlines for applications. Finally, it is important for parents and students to remember that the deadline to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid is March 1. In fact, we recommend that everyone files before Feb. 15.

"There are many ways to make a private education affordable," he said. "The key is to apply early and to seek guidance from your college admission counselor and high school guidance office."

Wesleyan, which has enjoyed an increase in enrollment each of the past three years, is off to a strong start with the number of applications received to date. The total number of applications received is the highest in five years to date.
