The Democrats for Life of America (DFLA) announced its endorsement of U.S. Rep. Alan Mollohan's bid for election in the 1st Congressional District of West Virginia.
The organization cited Mollohan's consistent and passionate support for pro-life issues and his leadership in passing the health care reform bill in making the endorsement.
"Washington needs more leaders like Alan Mollohan. Congressman Mollohan has proven his commitment to protecting life at all stages and I am confident that we can continue to count on him to stand up for what is right in the U.S. House," said Kristen Day, executive director of DFLA. "His leadership and experience was critical in securing the assurance and executive order from the president that no federal funds will be used to pay for abortion in the health care reform bill. Alan Mollohan's leadership will pave the way for millions of American's to buy affordable health insurance."
In its endorsement, the DFLA cited his strong support for the right to life and his strong support for the Pregnant Women Support Act, which was included in the Health Care Reform Act.
The provisions will provide more support for pregnant women so they do not see abortion as their only choice. Mollohan is willing to take the right stand on life issues and work to promote legislation that will provide protections for the unborn and assistance to those who need it, according to the DFLA.
"As an appropriator, Congressman Mollohan has also worked tirelessly to protect pro-life provisions, such as continuing the longstanding policy against federal funding for abortion in legal aid, military facilities, the federal health employee benefit plan and other appropriations bills. For these reasons, we are truly proud to endorse his candidacy."
"The Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act was one of the most important pro-life votes that I have cast during my tenure in Congress," Mollohan said. "This measure, and the accompanying executive order, prohibits federal funding of abortion, protects conscience and supports at-risk pregnant women and extends the adoption tax credit. I cannot think of a single piece of legislation that more robustly protects life at every stage."
