50th anniversary

John and Norma Wanless of Elkins celebrated 50 years of marriage on May 26.

The couple were married in Oakland, Maryland, by the Rev. S. Walthall.

Mr. Wanless is the son of the late John "Bus" and Helena Wanless.

Mrs. Wanless is the daughter of Mary Margaret and the late James M. Isner.

They are the parents of two sons, John Wanless Jr. and Joe Wanless, the grandparents of Jeremy Wanless, Vince and Bryan Wanless and Kevin and Emily Wanless, and the great-grandparents of Levi Wanless and William and Jacob Ward.

Mr. Wanless was employed by the Division of Highways and numerous area contractors. He worked on construction of the hydro-electric dam in Bath County, Virginia. He retired from the Surry Nuclear Power Plant in Surry, Virginia, as a quality control inspector and currently works for ITLS during refueling of nuclear plants in various states.

Mrs. Wanless was employed by the Randolph County Board of Education and Davis & Elkins College. She graduated from Davis Memorial Hospital LPN School in 1975 and worked in the operating room at Memorial General and Davis Memorial hospitals, day surgery in Hampton, Virginia, and same day surgery at Davis Memorial before retiring.

A surprise Hawaiian luau dinner and party was hosted May 9 at the First United Methodist Church. Music was provided by John Wanless Jr., Jeremy and Jesse Wanless, Joe and Kathy Gainer, Riece Brown and Pauline Newlon. The surprise evening was planned by daughter-in-law Jennifer Wanless and granddaughter Jesse Wanless with help from family and friends. Five generations of Mrs. Wanless' family were in attendance.
