Weston, Braxton capture opening round victories

Weston and Braxton County earned opening round wins Tuesday of the Area 5 American Legion tournament at Robin?Harvey Memorial Field.

Weston 13, Preston 6

Nate Kemper and Tyler Wood had two hits each to lead Weston past Preston 13-6 in Game 1.

Josh Burton added two hits and drove in a run for Weston (8-20).

Kemper notched the win for Weston in five innings of work. He gave up five runs on seven hits, walked four and struck out four.

Brian Cool took the loss for Preston in 1 2/3 innings of work. He gave up six runs on five hits, walked two and struck out two.

Alex Clarkson and Tyler Shaffer had two hits apiece to lead Preston (3-22).

Braxton County 9, Buckhannon 5

Justin Frame and Ian Morris had three hits each?to lead Braxton County past Buckhannon in the nightcap.

Aaron Conant followed with two hits for Braxton County.

Garrett Miller earned the win for Braxton County in a complete-game effort.

Miller gave up five runs on six hits, walked five and struck out 13.

Daniel Powell took the loss for Buckhannon in seven innings pitched. He gave up nine runs on nine hits, walked two and struck out seven.

Garrett Riley had three hits to lead Post 7 at the plate (6-17).

Elkins will play Weston at 5 p.m. today in a winners bracket contest.

Preston plays Buckhannon at 8 p.m. in an elimination game.
