EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The Elkins 14-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars split a pair of games Thursday on the opening day of the Ohio Valley Babe Ruth regional tournament.
Elkins lost its first game of the day to Ashwaubenon (Wis.) 10-4, but rebounded for a 9-6 victory over South Gibson (Ind.) in its second contest.
Kollin Hopwood and Tyler Shreve had two hits each and scored one run apiece to lead Elkins in opener.
Jake Wyatt added a RBI single, while Colby Gainer, Garrett Riggleman and Clayton Collett all had hits for Elkins.
Silas Gibson took the loss for Elkins in four innings pitched. Gainer pitched the last three innings of relief.
Elkins won the second game behind a complete-game effort on the mound from starting pitcher Brandon Herron.
Gibson, Logan Phillips and Hopwood had two hits each for Elkins.
Gainer, Collett, Herron, Shreve and Tyler Harris added one hit apiece for Elkins.
"We played a lot better in the second game than we did in the first contest," said Elkins coach Jay Gainer. "We were very nervous in the first game and we made some simple mistakes and errors which hurt us.
"I was happy with how our kids came back in Game 2, though. We had some key hits and played well."
Elkins will play Zanesville, Ohio today at 5 p.m.
"We need to come out and try to limit our mistakes on Friday, because Zanesville has a good team," said Gainer.
Zanesville defeated South Gibson 6-5 in its opening game of the tourney Thursday.
