On Nov. 2, Tygarts Valley Presbyterian Church will host a day-long celebration for the youth of the area. During this Election Day while youth are out of school, Tygarts Valley will give the youth an opportunity to come together to have fun, share in fellowship and to talk about what 'church' really means in today's world.
The key note speaker will be the Rev. Stephen Baldwin. Baldwin masquerades as the minister of the Ronceverte Presbyterian Church by day, when by night he is a semi-pro wrestler and underground rapper. As part of his cover, he is a graduate of Queens University of Charlotte and Vanderbilt Divinity School. His wife, Kerry, and his canine daughter, Ella, are very supportive ... despite the awkwardness of it all.
Baldwin will be talking with the youth about how church can be an important and relevant part of life. There will be an opportunity to discuss in large and small groups ideas, concerns and questions about what the church has to do with day to day life.
There will be two worship opportunities during the day as well. Andrew Tilley of Marshall University will provide music for the worship with his drums and guitar. A spirituality center will be available to spend some quiet time for those who would like to spend time in reflection, and there will be several pastors there from different traditions to talk with students.
The day is not entirely about learning, there will also be a time to do some service for the community. The participants will be wrapping shoe boxes for Operation Christmas child. The shoe boxes will then be available for members of the community to fill to send gifts to children around the world who would not otherwise have any presents for Christmas.
The youth will share lunch and dinner together, participate in large group games, energizers and a campfire with s'mores as part of this day together.
The day will begin at 9:30 a.m. with snacks; lunch and dinner will also be provided. All middle school and high school students in the area are welcome to come be a part of this event. Tygarts Valley Presbyterian Church is located in Huttonsville.
