The Midwives Alliance of West Virginia (MAWV), along with the Friends of Midwives (FOM), met in Weston recently for their annual joint meeting.
MAWV has been a professional organization of midwives in the Mountain State since 1981. FOM is a consumer-based organization that began in 2006.
MAWV and FOM meet several times throughout the year. Members plan and attend events in various West Virginia communities, such as health fairs and farmer's markets to promote the Midwives Model of Care, a simple concept stating that pregnancy and childbirth are natural, normal life processes.
During the recent meeting, midwives, Sarita Bennett and Ruth Ann Colby Martin, were presented with an honorary award for their outstanding achievement in establishing the first West Virginia school for student midwives. The school, Sacred Mountain Midwifery School, was established in 2009 and is conducted at The Mountain Institute on Spruce Knob.
