Organizers of the fourth annual Weston 5K Run/Walk on April 16 want to make sure that area children can be involved in the healthy activity. They have added a short foot race named the Weston Wee Run for children age 10 and younger.
Young participants will run from East Second Street to First Street, along Court Avenue, in Weston at 11 a.m. The children will receive a T-shirt and prize for the event.
The Weston 5K Run and Wellness Walk will begin at 10 a.m. that day. Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, the city of Weston and Saint Patrick Church and School cooperate for the event. Weston radio station WHAW and WDTV Channel Five are corporate sponsors.
Prizes in both the female and male contests are $150 for first place; $75 for second place; and $25 for third place. This year there are nine age categories: 11-15; 16-20; 21-25; 26-35; 36-45; 46-55; 56-65; 66-75; and 76-plus.
Both registration forms can be obtained by going to www.stonewallhospital.com. In the menu on the left side, click on either Weston 5K Run/Walk or Weston Wee Run.
"We are getting interest from a variety of groups," said co-chairwoman Mary Hendricks. "We want everyone to realize that this isn't just for runners, but for everyone who wants to get out and walk their way to wellness. The addition of the Wee Run last year was a way for us to encourage residents of all ages to get out and walk or run to wellness."
