Canaan refuge to host bat presentation

September 16, 2011
The Inter-Mountain

Jim Van Gundy, a professor emeritus of environmental science, will present a program on bats at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center.

The presentation will explore the biology and ecology of bats in West Virginia. Van Gundy's presentation also will provide a glimpse into current challenges to the overall health of bat populations across the world. A passionate spelunker, Van Gundy has explored many of the area's local caves and possesses an intimate knowledge of cave environments throughout the region.

Van Gundy retired after 29 years of teaching and mentoring at Davis & Elkins College. Since his "official" retirement, he has continued to be involved in the West Virginia Master Naturalist Program as a curriculum developer and instructor.

Light refreshments will be provided following the presentation. For more information, call Cindy Phillips at 304-866-3858, ext. 33.
