Editor:

The Upshur County Breast Cancer Awareness Committee thanks everyone who played a part in the Breast Cancer Awareness Day Activities.

The committee includes individuals from WVU Extension Service, Upshur County CEOS, Upshur County Health Department, Fred Brooks Garden Club, Tri-County Clinic, Buckhannon Medical Care, St. Joseph's Hospital, Associates for Women's Health, Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program and the American Cancer Society. Door prizes were provided by the committee.

We extend a special thanks to: Amy Cook for her courage to share her story of the struggles she had accepting breast cancer and the support of family and friends while going through her treatments. She said the remedy is to laugh often.

We thank Dr. Kimberly Farry and Dr. Michael Rollins for their medical expertise in informing us about breast cancer and its effective treatment. Deaths from breast cancer are lower in number due to the improved method of detecting breast cancer.

We thank the County Commissioners, Donnie Tenney, Creed Pletcher and J.C. Rafferty, and the Mayor of Buckhannon, Kenneth Davidson, for signing the Breast Cancer Awareness Month Proclaim nations.

Special thanks go to: Stockert Youth Center, for use of their facility; St. Joseph's Hospital, for the sandwiches; Buckhannon Medical Care, for the veggie tray; Health Department, for the punch; Walmart, for the cake; Jenkins Ford, for the helium for the balloon launch; Dollar General Store, for the helium for the balloons placed on the bridge; Feola's Flowers, for the roses given to the breast cancer survivors; Mark and Margaret Riggs, for the favors; WV Wesleyan College, for providing tables and chairs; Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program, for the cosmetic bags; and Upshur County Library, for our display.

The following businesses donated items for a raffle. Without their continued support we would not have been able to donate to a fund that provides free mammograms for women with no insurance:

Aaron's, American Furniture,,Andregg Jewelers,,Aristocrat Glass, Brakes Dairy King, Anita's Flower Shop, Applause for Hair, Arby's, Buckhannon Office & School Supply, Carquin's Party World, C.J. Maggies, Donut Shop, Fisher Auto, Hallmark Store, Hardee's, Helen's Henhouse, Hibbitt's Sports, Hometown Market, Inter-Mountain Newspaper, Jenkins Ford, Kroger, Lowes, Maroma's Mexican Restaurant, C.J. Martin Fuel, Merle Norman's, Michoacan Mexican Restaurant, Mike Ross, Miller's Pharmacy, Modern Hair Design, Papa John's, Pizza Hut, Ralph's Furniture, Record Delta, Saffles Goodies and Sam's Pizza.

Simplicity Tanning, Southern States, State Farm Ins., Stitching House, T&L Hotdog and Wendlings.

We thank all others who contributed to the success of this program. We need the support of the community to stress the importance of self-breast exams, clinical exams by a physician and a mammogram. The American Cancer Society recommends a yearly mammogram for women starting at age 40.
