Autism center plans events

December 10, 2011
The Inter-Mountain

The Expression of Colors Autism Resource Center will host its first community training session, "Autism: Understanding the Basics." It's set for p.m. Dec. 13 at 320 Randolph Ave., Elkins.

Kimberly Tucker, assistant chief officer at William R. Sharpe Jr.'s Hospital, will speak at the event. She will give insight on what autism is and how it affects individuals, both with and without autism.

The center also has organized a "Soothing Santa" event, because visiting Santa at a loud, crowded location often is too much for autistic children to handle. The special event is set from 5 to 10 p.m. Dec. 17.

It will allow children affected by autism to comfortably share in one of the joys of Christmas in a calm and relaxing environment. Each child and the child's parents will receive around 10 to 15 minutes with Santa and one of his elves in a private, dimly lit room with soft Christmas music.

While the children wait to see Santa, the center will have activities in different parts of the center, such as Christmas ornament crafts, coloring and snacks.

Both events are open to the public, and more information is available by calling 304-637-0450 or emailing expressionofcolors.autism@gmail.com.
