Hilda Pennington

January 11, 2012
The Inter-Mountain

Hilda Helmick Pennington, 79, a resident of Elkins, departed this life in the early hours of Dec. 24, 2011, at her home with family by her side.

She was born Sept. 14, 1932, a daughter of the late Maple Helmick Richardson.

On June 23, 1951, she married James Pennington, who preceded her in death.

Hilda is survived by three sons, Jim Pennington and wife, Anna, of Dallas, Texas, John Pennington and wife, Amanda, of Elkins and Joe "JO JO" Pennington of Elkins; two daughters, Debbie Legg and husband, Rick, of Charleston and Joni Crum of Morgantown; and three granddaughters, Jessica Legg and fiance, Sam Boggs, of Charleston, Jordan Legg and fiance, Jacob Bagwell, of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Lindsy Baker of Elkins. Also surviving are two brothers, Robert "Bob" Helmick of Louisville, Ky. and Bernie "Pooch" Helmick of Columbus, Ohio; special nephew, Brian Helmick; two brothers-in-law, Otha Pennington and wife, Betty, of Elkins and Leo Pennington and wife, Macy, of Florida; special sister, Irene Sutton of Cassville; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death besides her husband and mother were two brothers, Gay Helmick and Dana Helmick, and one sister, Linda.

Hilda was the owner of Cardinal Gifts and Bridal for more than 30 years. She received much joy in the many brides she "put" down the aisle. Hilda was involved in many civic and community organizations, such as the Elkins Jaycettes and Womans Club, Davis Memorial Hospital Holly Ball, The Mountain State Forest Festival and as a teacher's aide with the Randolph County Schools, just to name a few.

Her love for Elkins High School and the class of 1951 gave her true happiness throughout her life. Hilda had great pride in being the only cheerleader in the class of 1951.

Hilda was very fortunate to have the Elkins Senior Center, Hospice and her friends and neighbors caring for her over the past few years. Her family wishes to thank everyone who has touched her life through prayers and support over the past few years.

At Hilda's request, her body has been cremated. A memorial service and celebration of Hilda's life will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 14, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 315 Kerens Ave., Elkins with Pastor Barry Moll officiating.

The Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services has been entrusted with the arrangements for Hilda Helmick Pennington. Send online condolences to the family at www.therandolphfuneralhome.com.
