B-U wrestlers defeat Nicholas, Senior

BUCKHANNON - Buckhannon-Upshur won two out of three duals Friday evening in high school wrestling action. The home quadrangular event included victories over Nicholas County and Fairmont Senior, with the night's lone loss to the state's third-ranked team, Huntington High.

Coach J.P. Tenney's Bucs defeated Nicholas 40-18, and Fairmont Senior 56-24. Their loss to Huntington was by a 58-9 count. Dakota Linger produced a pair of wins on the night in the 120-pound weight class, as did Isiah Moore at 152. Three other Bucs recorded one on the mat victory in the event; Matt Fair at 132, Seth Cutright at 145, and Bruce Marshall at 182.

B-U wrestles in the Big 10 Conference Tournament this weekend. The event is being hosted by Robert C. Byrd on Friday and Saturday.

Middle school wrestling

Little Bucs place third

Buckhannon-Upshur placed third overall at this weekend's Mason-Dixon Conference Middle School Wrestling Championships. Four different B-U grapplers placed in the event.

Eighth-grader Brandon continued to dominate as he has throughout his middle school career. He won the individual title in the 90-pound weight class, and was named the conference's Wrestler of the Year.

Three other Little Bucs placed in the tourney, Levi Crites placed third in the 78-pound division, while Jack Garcia at 110 and Logan Cutright at 123 each brought home fifth-place finishes.

College swimming

Wesleyan bows to FSU

BUCKHANNON - Fairmont State University swam to a pair of narrow victories Saturday afternoon over West Virginia Wesleyan. The Falcon men defeated the Bobcats 99-82, while the women recorded a 105-75 win.

Wesleyan produced three different race victories on each side. With the women, the Bobcats had two individual victors and one relay. Hope Lima collected first place in the 400 Individual Medley in 4:58.93, while Vivian Minkemeyer raced home first in the 100-fly in 1:04.93.

The relay victory was the 400 medley relay team of Minkemeyer, Ashley Kirkhart, Rachel Bailer, and Ellen Denton in a time of 4:33.93.

Three different individuals registered wins on the men's side.

Mark Mattis won the 200 Individual Medley in 2:02.54, Jeff Dye the 100 backstroke in 53.70, and Max Garner the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.19.

Wesleyan swims in the Bluegrass Mountain Championships on Feb. 15 in Charlotte, N.C.
