Be prepared for an influx of tourists

It looks like Randolph County is attracting quite a bit of attention from potential visitors.

Brenda Pritt, executive director of the the Randolph County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said last week that she has seen an increase in website traffic and the group has gained more fans on Facebook. Specifically, she pointed out that in the last three months, more than 7,000 people viewed the website.

Likewise, the Polar Express holiday train excursion has nearly doubled its number of trips for next season, and we've heard that interest is growing in the number of people wanting to see shows at American Mountain Theater. Plus, there's a good chance that plenty of positive comments have been spread by word of mouth.

All of this is certainly uplifting. As Pritt noted, "We strongly believe tourism is a vital part of our local economy."

However, we have to ask ourselves if we're prepared to host an influx of tourists and keep them entertained and content so that they extend their stays and make return trips. Now is the time to prepare.

It might be a good idea for tourism leaders and business owners to get together and consider their expectations for the coming months.
