Consultants offer special attention

February 17, 2012

After taking time to find the perfect mate, future brides should have that same sort of mindset when it comes to picking out that special wedding dress, local wedding experts say.

"If they have a particular style or dress in mind, they should bring the picture," said Angela Oliverio, the owner of Oliverio's Bridal in the Eastpointe Shopping Center in Clarksburg. "We try to get them to have an open mind. What they see in the magazine doesn't always work best with their bodies."

That's why bridal consultants urge women to make an appointment to try on wedding dresses. That way, the brides-to-be can receive that special attention in choosing that special dress.

A few of the styles of wedding gowns available at The Fashion Scene in Fairmont are shown here.

"Try on different styles, different necklines," said Rena Potista, the owner of The Fashion Scene on Main Street in Fairmont for the past 33 years. "A lot of times, they will change their minds. Today, there is such a variety, even with the fabrics."

When the bride enters the shop, her head is often spinning from all of the advice from family, friends, co-workers and other well-wishers. Missy Tyler, the owner of Ever After Bridal in downtown Clarksburg, said the bride should "follow her gut."

"It's what you feel is best for you, rather than what is best for everybody else," she said. "You want to make yourself happy. It's your day, not everybody else's day."

Allow at least an hour, if not two for the appointment.

"The biggest mistake many brides make is that they listen to too many opinions," Oliverio said. "It's their gown. They are the one who needs to be happy."

All three stores offer alterations to help the dress fit perfectly on the big day. Oliverio's also offers advice on reception halls, florists, photographers and other aspects needed for the day.

Ever After Bridal even offers its own reception hall to make it a one-stop shop for weddings.

"Anything you need for the wedding, I can supply," she said, "except for the groom."

Bridesmaids' dresses, dresses for the mother of the bride and for the flower girls can be found at these shops as well, along with formal wear for the groom and his party.
