Alderson-Broaddus College is proud to announce that sophomore Rachael McKinney, an English major and journalism minor from Rainelle, has been awarded a 2012 Appalachian College Association Col. Lee B. Ledford Award for Student Research.
She will use the award to study women and their use of technology in newsrooms of the Ogden Newspapers Inc. The Ogden company owns more than 100 newspapers in the Appalachian region, Florida, Hawaii and other states.
McKinney will do the bulk of her work in the summer, but will do some field work at some local newspapers in the spring. She also will do survey research of all of the Ogden Group newspapers. The ACA minigrant will fund travel, equipment, supplies and an hourly stipend.
Rachael McKinney was awarded a 2012 Appalachian College Association Col. Lee B. Ledford Award for Student Research.
"The Selection Committee was favorably impressed by your application and looks forward to the success of this project as you and your mentor, Professor James Wilkie, begin work on your project," said Dr. Irene Burgess, vice president for Academic Programs at Appalachian College Association, in a letter sent to McKinney.
Ledford was a native of Harlan County, Ky., and was dedicated to providing Appalachian youth valuable educational opportunities outside the classroom.
