Buckhannon Lions entertain speakers

April 10, 2012
The Inter-Mountain

The Buckhannon Lions Club recently hosted speakers Upshur County Commissioner Creed Pletcher and Superintendent of the West Virginian Wildlife Center Gene Thorn at a meeting that also welcomed two new members.

Pletcher said that county commissioners are required to meet four times a year, but the Upshur Commission meets weekly. Each meeting is open to the public. He stated that each commissioner is assigned agencies, and each must go to Charleston for 12 days of training. He also noted that the commission handles all purchasing and pays for all bills for the county.

Thorn told the group that the Wildlife Center contains 300 acres of land and 80 acres are in development. He said the current development started in 1986. He explained that phase one has been completed, but phases two and three are still in development. He also noted that the funds they receive are not enough to cover the costs, and special events are in the works.
