Upcoming event open to everyone

April 21, 2012
By the Rev. Alicia Randolph Rapking Parish House Director , The Inter-Mountain

Every year on or about the last Saturday of April, there are numerous events held around our Annual Conference called the Celebration of Mission Event or C.O.M.E.

These events have been occurring for quite a few years and originally were designed to help our churches get to know and to raise money for our annual conference mission projects. Each year the representatives of mission projects are invited to two events to be highlighted as well as to receive donations for the projects. Last year, I spent a beautiful Saturday in the Greenbrier District and spoke about the Upshur Parish House and our ministries. There was a great worship service, wonderful food, an auction and a great day for fellowship.

This year, on April 28, I will represent the Upshur Parish House in the Parkersburg area. However, on that same day, everyone is invited to participate in C.O.M.E. for the Wesleyan District. It will be held in Buckhannon at First United Methodist Church. The two mission projects that will be highlighted for the Wesleyan district are House of the Carpenter in Wheeling and Scotts Run Settlement House in Osage. Mike Linger is the director at the House of the Carpenter and Julie Harris is the brand new director at Scotts Run. I know you will want to meet these two directors and hear about their projects.

The celebration will begin at 8 a.m., with breakfast served as setup occurs. At 10 a.m., the Praise and Worship Service will begin featuring the children and youth choirs of Chapel Hill UMC. All the craft and sale tables will open at 10:30 a.m., and the auction will begin at 11 a.m.

Each church is encouraged to participate by bringing items for the auction and items for the mission projects. A needs list is available at the Wesleyan district office, and all area United Methodist pastors also received a list. The items needed for both projects are similar to the items that the Parish House would need. We also encourage everyone to come and be a part of the celebration and fellowship!

These Celebration of Mission Events are extremely important for our mission projects. They raise money for the projects, and last year's figure reached around $90,000 conference-wide. The events also offer opportunities to tell the stories of the projects and to let folks all over the Annual Conference know what is happening in each of the sites.

Please make it a point to participate in the Wesleyan District C.O.M.E. April 28 at First United Methodist, Buckhannon.

To God be the Glory!
