Lewis edges Elkins; Pendleton sweeps TV

Cassie Butcher had three hits to lead Lewis County to a 3-2 victory over Elkins Tuesday in Class AAA, Region II, Section 4 tournament action at Elkins Middle School.

Tori Riley and Ashley Murray added two hits each for Lewis County. Cheyiannea Watson collected a run-scoring triple for the Minutemaids.

Riley notched the win for Lewis County in seven innings of work. She gave up three runs on five hits, walked one and struck out three.

"This was a big win for us," Lewis County coach Missy Riley said. "We've worked hard all season to get ready for sectionals. We hit the ball well and played good defense.

"Tori really pitched a good game and I want to give credit to our catcher Hannah Simmons for calling the pitches - she did a great job."

Michaela Lewis-Lambert took the loss for the Lady Tigers in seven innings pitched. She gave up three runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out eight.

Kelsi Trippett had a double and drove in a run, while Haylee Miller added a run-producing single for Elkins (9-12).

"This was a very disappointing loss to start off sectional tournament play," Elkins coach Corrine Palmer said. "We didn't hit the ball tonight and we didn't play good defense."

Elkins will look to stay alive when it travels to Buckhannon-Upshur for another sectional contest at 6 p.m. today.

Lewis County will play the winner of the Elkins-Buckhannon-Upshur game on Thursday.

PC?SWEEPS?TV: Pendleton County captured the Class A, Region II, Section 3 championship after sweeping a pair of games from Tygarts Valley on Tuesday.

Pendleton County will now play either East Hardy or Moorefield on May 10 in the regional semifinals.

The Lady Wildcats (11-11) won the first game 17-4 and completed the sweep with a13-5 victory in the nightcap.

Codi Evick notched the win in Game 1 for Pendleton County in five innings pitched. She gave up two earned runs on five hits, walked three and struck out nine.

Brittany Huffman had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Lady Wildcats at the plate in the opener. Danielle Gray added a two-run single.

Shaunna Taylor took the loss for the Lady Bulldogs in five innings of work.

Brittany Shamblin knocked in a pair of runs in a losing effort.

Huffman picked up the win for Pendleton County in Game 2. She gave up five runs on five hits, walked three and struck out six in five innings pitched.

Hillary Ord had two hits and three RBIs for the Lady Wildcats.

Charity Lower took the loss for the Lady Bulldogs and helped her own cause at the plate with a RBI?double.
