A Barbour County resident wielding a gun threatened to kill his wife and his mother-in-law, and take away his child by force on Monday, according to police.

Justin Robert White, 25, of 410 Mount Olive Road in Philippi, was taken into custody following the incident and charged with domestic assault, a felony. Bond was set at $5,000.

Elizabeth White claimed that her husband had been drunk and had gotten violent, threatening to shoot her mother at Baughman Towers, then come to shoot her, and take their son, according to police. The suspect had a shotgun at the time he made the threats, police said.

The victim fled out the back of the residence with her son and sought help at her father-in-law's residence, police said. She and her son reside at the same location as the suspect.

Sgt. John Wyatt of the West Virginia State Police, who was dispatched to investigate the scene, said that he took the victim to a safe place and then went to search for the suspect.

The incident occurred in the night time hours between Sunday night and Monday morning.
