Richard and Betty Walden of Elkins celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on May 23.
Mr. Walden, also known as "Coach," and Betty were married in 1952 at First United Methodist Church in Welch.
Both began their teaching careers in McDowell County. For many years, Mr. Walden taught social studies and coached football, basketball and track at Welch High School. Mrs. Walden taught math at the school.

They returned to Elkins in 1969, and Mrs. Walden taught at Third Ward Elementary School before joining the Elkins High School faculty. She retired in 1989. Mr. Walden taught physical education at Elkins Junior High School and was head coach for football, basketball and track. He became assistant principal and then principal at EJHS. He retired in 1988.
During Mr. Walden's tenure as principal, he introduced the middle school concept and modified the curriculum. He also was an officer in the West Virginia National Guard and retired at the rank of captain after 20 years of service.
The Waldens are members of Elkins Lions Club, Randolph County Retired Teachers and First United Methodist Church in Elkins. Mrs. Walden also is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Elkins Lioness Club.
They have one daughter, Barbara, and she and husband, Ed Tyre, have two sons, Rich and Matt, who reside in Florida.
They will celebrate their anniversary by renewing their vows during a picnic at their daughter and son-in-law's home in Elkins. After the picnic, family and friends will join the couple for an evening of entertainment at the American Mountain Theater.
