Cancer survivors in Upshur County and the surrounding area will have a chance to gather Sunday for the annual National Cancer Survivors Day.
The local event will take place at 2 p.m. at the Buckhannon Moose Lodge 598, located at 25 N. Kanawha St.
Barbara Murray, an event organizer and cancer survivor, first celebrated Cancer Survivors Day when she lived in Maryland. After moving to Buckhannon, she felt it was important to begin a celebration for local survivors.
Murray said the event is a wonderful opportunity for folks to come together and share their stories and survivorship with others.
"It's an opportunity to praise God," she said.
This year's guest speaker will be Mike Alkire, community manager for the American Cancer Society.
Murray said she appreciates all the community and business support, in both participating in this important event and providing food and door prizes.
National Cancer Survivors Day is a cherished annual worldwide celebration of life. It is a day for everyone - cancer survivors, family members, friends or medical professionals. This day provides an opportunity for all people living with a history of cancer - including America's 12 million cancer survivors - to connect with each other, celebrate milestones and recognize the healthcare providers, family and friends who have supported them along the way.
"A 'survivor' is anyone living with a history of cancer - from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life," according to the National Cancer Survivor's Day Foundation website, at www.ncsdf.org.
