Harley Richard Sanders, 89, of Crawford, died Saturday, June 2, 2012, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
He was born Dec. 4, 1922, in Braxton County, a son of the late Richard Columbus and Bessie Margaret Burr Sanders.
He was united in marriage to his wife of 65 years, Elona Gathel Andrew, on April 12, 1947, who survives.
Also surviving are four sons, Harley Richard Sanders, Jr. of Waterford, Ohio, Timothy Herald Sanders of Dixie, Terry Allen Sanders of Crawford and Osburn Franklin Sanders of Crawford; eight grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Hylton Sanders and Delbert Sanders; and three sisters, Goldie Gregory, Dorothy Flesher and Winnie McCune.
Mr. Sanders served in the 69th Infantry Division, 880th Field Artillery of the U.S. Army in the European Theater during WWII. He served in England, France, Belgium and Germany. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the Bronze Star, the American Theater Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, and the WWII Victory Ribbon. He was also a member of the United Mine Workers Union.
The family will receive friends today from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Heavner and Cutright Funeral Chapel.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at 1 p.m. from the funeral chapel with Pastor David Jessie officiating. Interment will follow in the Rock Cave Cemetery. The Buckhannon VFW Post 3663, the Frank B. Bartlett Post 7 American Legion and the DAV Chapters 5 and 36 will conduct military honors at the graveside.
