Mr. Shirley Leon Ervin, 86, a resident of Belington, went home to be with the Lord at 6:45 p.m. Sunday, June 3, 2012, at his daughter Brenda's residence in Belington.
He was born Aug. 28, 1925, at Belington, a son of the late Dixie Leon and Nola Valdia Calhoun Ervin.
On Aug. 6, 1947, at Oakland, Md., he was united in marriage to the former Sylvia Belle Ferguson, who preceded him in death June 1, 2002.
He is survived by two sons, Roger L. Ervin and wife, Lora, of Philippi, and George M. Ervin and wife, Murlie, of the Philippines; and two daughters, Brenda J. Baisi and husband, Ronnie, of Belington, Judy P. Ritter and husband, Michael, of Elkins. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Roger Ervin II, Richard Ervin, Gregory Baisi, Anthony Baisi, Debra Baisi, Dianne Baisi, Mike Ervin, Bryan Ervin, Ashley McCauley and Jordan Crane; and great-grandchildren include Hayden, Colby, Virginia "Ginny," Vincent, Madison, Tristin, Grayson, Michael, Alexis, Jayden and Dakota.
Mr. Ervin graduated from the Belington High School with the class of 1943 and was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps where he served during World War II. In his former years, he was employed by Kane and Keyser Hardware Co. in Belington, was a Belington city police officer, had been employed for the West Virginia State Liquor Commission and retired from the Davis & Elkins College as a security officer. He was a member and a former commander of the Laurel Mountain Post 410 Veterans of Foreign Wars in Belington, also was a member of the American Legion Post 96 of Belington and was a Baptist by faith.
Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home in Belington from 6 to 9 p.m. today and again on Wednesday from 8 until 11 a.m., the funeral hour when final rites will be conducted with Pastor Howard Swick and Pastor Bryan Headley officiating. Interment will follow in the Fraternal Cemetery at Belington where full military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 44 of Philippi and Post 96 of Belington.
